Let’s be honest: family photo day can sometimes feel more stressful than special. You’ve got outfits to coordinate, kids who would rather be anywhere else, and a partner who’s… less than thrilled. I get it. But here’s the good news—it doesn’t have to be that way.
Talk it up like an adventure! Kids pick up on your energy—if you’re stressed, they’ll feel it. Instead, set a positive tone by talking about the session like it’s a special outing or adventure. Tell them you’ll be going somewhere fun and spending time together. Let them know the photographer (that’s me!) is super friendly and loves working with kids. A little excitement goes a long way!
Keep expectations age-appropriate. Every age has its own set of challenges—and that’s totally okay. You don’t need “perfect” behavior to get beautiful photos. Toddlers might need breaks or want to explore, older kids might feel a little shy or silly. Letting them help with a pose or bring a favorite item can help them feel more confident. The key? Let them be themselves. Natural, unscripted moments often make the most meaningful photos.
Bribe them (Yes, it’s totally okay!) Sometimes a little motivation can help kids cooperate—just keep it simple. Make it a team effort. “Let’s all smile so we can get to the ice cream faster!” works wonders. Promise a treat or reward after the session (ice cream, playground time, movie night). Avoid snacks during the session—sticky fingers and chocolate smudges don’t photograph well!
Partner prep – get everyone on board! If we’re being real, it’s not always the kids who need convincing. Sometimes your partner isn’t exactly counting down the days to photo time—and that’s okay too. Here’s how to help. Share why these photos matter to you. Maybe it’s about capturing this moment before the kids grow up, or finally having something beautiful to hang on your walls. Show them past sessions (especially relaxed, candid ones) so they know what to expect. Remind them it won’t take forever—and I’ll guide you all the whole way.
Trust your photographer! You don’t need to choreograph every smile or fix every hair. You’ve hired someone who knows how to capture real, meaningful moments—sometimes the magic happens in the chaos. If someone is upset or grumpy, we’ll pivot. If kids get silly, we’ll roll with it. If it’s not going exactly to plan, chances are we’re still getting beautiful photos.
